- Evaluate the condition of your wood and strip away any old finish if necessary
- Apply a wood deck cleaner and use a low pressure wash to remove dirt, algae, etc.
- Apply a wood brightner which neutralizes the pH level, enhances the grain, and opens pores so the wood is ready to accept stain
- Allow a couple of days of good weather for wood to dry, then you are ready to stain
